| our gas situation despite what the daily show may tell you is not and has never been "dire" since the 70's. If anything the biggest problem in our gas "situation" is our gross lack of perspective. For decades we have enjoyed prices FAR below the rest of the world and have not allowed any expansion in refining. When was the last time you heard about a refinery being built in your state? When was the last time you heard about any other type of production facility, a Hitachi plant, a goodyear facility, or whatever being built? Americans like driving cars, americans far prefer driving cars over any other form of travel. No matter what supposed "outrage" there is towards the oil companies, no one seems to be putting their money where there mouths are. The prices obviously arent high enough, or people would actually start looking elsewhere for transportation. The first quarter of negative figures for McDonalds along with the huge amount of negative publicity that "SuperSize Me" was about to bring, created a big change in what at one time was the "unstoppable" McDonalds. Truth is americans like to bitch, humans like to bitch, and no matter how much you and I do or dont bitch about gas prices, it obviously isnt as bad as any of us make it out to be because everyone STILL buys it, myself included. All businesses are entitled to a profit, and it is unfair to cherrypick which industries we are going to villify and which ones we give a free pass to. What about football? $6000 for a superbowl ticket? What about medicine? $1200 for an emergency ride in an ambulance? What about music? $15 for a CD that costs $0.40 to produce? What about lodging? $300 to spend the night in a room? Thats over 2000% profit!! Why arent we picketing holiday inns? Perspective perspective, I stop letting the TV and politicians tell me what I should be getting pissed about and decide for myself based on my own understanding of whats going on. Get educated about something before you get up in arms about it. If the education process is too inconvenient for you then, then you obviously arent outraged enough. Never forget, the news is selling a product too, and if getting ppl in a tizzy is what it takes to keep them watching, better believe they will do it. That, ironically is what the daily show is all about, and it has become the very thing it mocks.
